BP#5 – Is happiness all that and then some ?

Psalm 94:18-19 “My foot is slipping”, Your love, O Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me your consolation brought joy to my soul…

The world is looking for happiness. They say they deserve to be happy. God says seek peace in Him and lasting joy in your soul. There is a big difference. Happiness is based on circumstances; what is happening in the now. That can change in an instant, then what do you have? For worldly happiness is central and peace and lasting joy are peripheral. For the believer, peace and lasting joy are central and happiness if peripheral. Those in Christ can have peace and joy with or without fleeting happiness. It depends on what a person is seeking. Some will do or say anything to find some happiness in life. Their goal is to keep the string of happiness going. It is a frustrating endeavor and they are always in a state of frustration and anger because someone has interrupted their happiness and they must find fault with and punish others for this abuse. Then some seek to dwell in Jesus. Can anything destroy us in Him? Let’s dwell in peace and joy. Others will see it and want what we have.

I want repeat what I said above:  For the world, happiness is central and peace and joy were peripheral. Have you thought about this? This is obvious to me; because peace and joy are unattainable and out of reach for the lost and hurting. The human soul longs for these elusive feelings of security.  So the counterfeit, temporary happiness, becomes the driving force. Many Christians are caught up in this pursuit as well. It is a form of idolatry and bondage. It is easier than dealing with any root issues like sin or abuse. Seeking happiness instead of joy in the Lord causes us to do things we know are wrong to find this soul satisfaction when it can only be found in love and obedience for our Creator. Happiness for the believer, walking in obedience, is peripheral because their soul is secure in happy times and sad. Humans need the loving God to fill this void in life, not their stuff. Let’s walk in obedience and worship and the joy of the Lord.
